Matthew M. Young leads the Credit Union Group at Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., LPA. He represents credit union clients exclusively, in Ohio and across the U.S., on a broad spectrum of legal and regulatory issues.
Mr. Young acts as General Counsel for a number of his credit union clients, advising on labor and employment, trust and estate, and litigation and title dispute matters. He also performs regular transactional work, including contract review and negotiation, and counsels on commercial paper and check issues and other collection matters. Additionally, he frequently liaises with Weltman’s Bankruptcy, Foreclosure, and Probate groups to deliver additional capacity to his clients, as needed.
In his role, Mr. Young works closely with everyone from boards of directors, to vice presidents and CEOs, to collections staff. The breadth and depth of his practice has expanded in direct response to the varied needs of his credit union clients, and their reliance on him as a trusted advisor. He genuinely enjoys problem solving and helping his clients effectively respond to industry challenges so they can focus on growing their business.
Mr. Young is a frequent presenter and trainer on many of the key issues impacting credit unions today, including such topics as fraud policy and prevention, consumer collection strategies, the Bank Secrecy Act, and Director and Officer liability training. He has been recognized for his professionalism and legal ability by the media with his inclusion in the list of "Ohio Rising Stars" by Ohio Super Lawyers for the past four consecutive years (2012-16).
Mr. Young is a member of the American Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, for which he serves on the Executive Council of the Membership Committee. Prior to joining Weltman, he worked for the Ohio Department of Commerce in its Division of Financial Institutions. He earned his J.D. from The Ohio State University’s Michael E. Moritz College of Law, and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Ohio University.
